The village of Black Dog is on one of the highest ridges of land between Dartmoor and Exmoor, 695 ft. It enjoys some superb views to both moors, but particularly of Dartmoor from the Black Dog Inn. A favoured watering hole for walkers on 'The Two Moors Way', Black Dog is in the parishes of Washford Pyne and Woolfardisworthy (pronounced Woolsery). The village and surroundings in many ways seem to be untouched by the 20th and 21st century. It is a rural idyll and represents a rural way of life. Although evolving it's virtually unchanged by the commercialisation, industrialisation and population explosion that has taken away, for ever, something that once gone, can never be regained.
Devon Ghosts
"In the parish of Washford Pyne there are two hamlets, Upper and Lower Black Dog. These take their name from the Inn of that name which stands on a cross roads which was once a wild open heath. Though now a few houses have clustered around it, beside the cross roads is an old well. The local tradition is that there used to be a tunnel leading from the cross roads to the earthworkds (Berry Castle) nearly a mile to the south. The mythical tunnel leads from the old well, and at the time of the Civil War, the entrance was guarded by the ghostly BLACK DOG. I heard this from a resident of the hamlet."
