This painting depicts reed combing in Mid Devon in 2003. The reed-combing machine was made by Marshall's in 1927 and originally would have been powered by steam. Marshall's have a good name for reliability and in 1903 won a gold medal for this particular design. Today traditional varieties of wheat are still grown such as Square Master or Square head, Red Standard, Victor and Little Josh. This painting was painted when the reed combers were working at Tree Farm - Black Dog in Mid-Devon.
